Nationally Known Painter
Kim English
The Figure in the Landscape
For experienced painters
June 23-27, 2008
$600, plus model fees

This five day workshop with nationally known painter Kim English will spend time both outdoors and in. There will be one to two days of landscape painting outdoors, and then the figure will be added to the landscape with the inclusion of a live model. Students will work with models in natural light in quick poses, working into longer poses as the class progresses. Kim is known for his great approach to light and shadow. He will do painting demos and also work individually with all students. Model fees will be an additional charge, to be shared by all the workshop students.

Kim will focus on the ability to paint quickly and accurately, which can be useful in many situations. Techniques for achieving a spontaneous, yet controlled approach will be practiced. Numerous small studies will be painted each day, followed by a critique. Kim says about his direct, quick-sketch approach, “Immediacy is important not only because it is often the nature of people, but for me, it is the most instinctive way to paint. The process is like a performance. It’s the magic of spontaneous work combined with a candid observation of society.”
