Carolyn Witschonke was born in the small town of Litchfield, Connecticut. She lived and studied for several years in Germany. While traveling Europe, she became fascinated with and influenced by the European masters, particularly Vermeer and Degas.

Upon her return to the United States, Carolyn began her studies at the Corcoran College of Art and Design in Washington, DC, where she earned her BFA. Through her education there and many visits to the museums and galleries in the area, she became more aware and influenced by the 20th century American masters.

Whether printmaking or painting, Carolyn prefers to experiment with different mediums and techniques, which she refers to as "vocabulary". She chooses the medium and technique best suited to visually express her artistic concepts. Whatever the medium, she often works in a series.

Carolyn believes in the interconnectedness of all things, and looks for ways to express this in her art. She loves nature, especially trees and flowers, and natural objects become symbols in her work.
