A well-known Mid-Atlantic painter, Bill Schmidt has been a plein air painter since his earliest lessons in Massachusetts decades ago. Like the early Impressionists, Bill does all but his largest paintings on site throughout the seasons, to best capture the vibrancy and effects of color, light, and shadow in a scene. Whether at home or abroad, marines and water-related scenes are Bill's favorites, though he also enjoys painting the countryside and street scenes.
In developing his own painting style, Bill was strongly influenced by Cape Ann, Massachusetts painters, and the French and American Impressionists he so admires. He was fortunate early on to take classes with several superb landscape painters who carried on the tradition of New England artists such as Emile Gruppe, Lester Stevens, and Anthony Thieme.
Bill's work has appeared in Art Business News, American Artist, The Artist's Magazine and on the cover of the 2003 edition of the Guide to Cruising the Chesapeake Bay. His work has twice been juried into the annual national exhibition of the American Impressionist Society at the Hillgoss Gallery in Chicago -- most recently in 2007. He has also been accepted into numerous national juried competitions sponsored by the Oil Painters of America, Arts for the Parks, and the International Marine Art Exhibition.
Bill is an Artist Member of the prestigious Salmagundi Club in New York City, as well as a member of the Oil Painters of America, American Impressionist Society, American Society of Marine Artists, Washington Society of Landscape Painters and Mid-Atlantic Plein Air Painters Association.
