Since 1983, Ross Merrill has been the Chief of Conservation at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. where he is responsible for the care of one of the world's great art collections. Ross' background in conservation and his research into artists' painting techniques gives him a unique insight into and understanding of styles and techniques.
Ross grew up in a small town in Texas where his interest in the outdoors has formed the subjects of his paintings. As John Wilmerding, the American art historian, said of Merrill's paintings, "His are solid compositions and timeless landscapes; his images preserve quiet moments and restful corners of the American Landscape; together his hand and eye save both nature and art for us to enjoy".
For three consecutive years, Ross has educated and entertained visitors and competition artists during Plein Air-Easton!, with his lectures on the history of plein air painting.
