Notes from Nancy :

It’s the end of summer, Plein Air-Easton! is a sweet memory, and our thoughts now turn to the gallery’s upcoming fall season. Our annual and much awaited Ed Cooper solo show opened during a busy and festive gallery walk on Friday, September 7. This year Ed’s show is titled Nature’s Palette on Canvas. Once again, just for this exhibit, Ed has painted an amazing array of glorious Eastern Shore landscapes. It’s hard to believe that this artist from the foothills of Virginia's Blue Ridge Mountains is able to capture the beauty of our sea level landscape with such authority and variety. But Ed spends a lot of time here, as he says “wandering”, putting many miles on his van, which he has equipped with everything a painter and camper could need. Ed’s show will hang in the two main first floor gallery rooms through Wednesday, October 3. We hope you will stop by the gallery in September, to savor Ed’s masterful works.

Low Tide, Hoopers Island  by Ed Cooper
Oil, 30x40   $4800

Just after his opening, Ed flew off to France to join me and Carl, Bethanne Kinsella Cople and Sara Linda Poly, for our first ever plein air painting workshop, in the quaint seaside village of Quimiac . I’ll tell you all about it in our next newsletter!

Looking ahead to October, our First Friday opening is another first. We are pairing the elegant and classic still life paintings of artist Jane Hartley, with classical opera sung by Mezzo Soprano Bonnie Forgacs. Following a career on the New York stage, Bonnie has returned to her roots here on the Eastern Shore . For this occasion, Bonnie has chosen an aria and two art songs, inspired by three of Jane’s paintings. These classical selections will debut at 6 PM, and then be repeated at 7 and 8 PM. Please stop by the gallery to view Jane’s beautiful exhibit, Mysteries Within, and enjoy some lovely music.

Over the last few weeks, I have been busily lining up our 2008 Workshop Schedule. We have put together an exciting roster of workshops, with several new instructors and locations, in addition the excellent ones already established. All the information will be posted on our web site’s Workshops page as it is finalized and confirmed. Meanwhile, we are winding down this year’s Workshop season with a final weekend workshop, Small Gems - Painting in Miniature, for all levels of painters, from beginners to advanced. This workshop will be taught by our own award winning miniature artist Diane DuBois Mullaly, on October 27 and 28, 2007. A great way to get set and inspired for indoor studio painting over the winter, and create your own small gems! Be sure to read the details of this workshop on our web site by clicking here.

The Annex Gallery in St. Michaels is celebrating its Grand Opening on Sunday, September 30, from 3 to 6 PM. Please stop in for a glass of wine and a tour of our charming little gallery and courtyard. Our opening is the same weekend as the Concours D’Elegance at The Inn at Perry Cabin, so St. Michaels should be hoppin’!! The Annex Gallery is located at 400 S. Talbot Street, at the corner of Grace Street.

As you read this, I am painting and teaching in France . South Street Art Gallery is open its regular hours, and our friendly and knowledgeable staff welcomes you.

And now… back to the easel!

UPCOMING SHOWS

September 7 - October 3, 2007   Ed Cooper, Nature's Palette on Canvas - Ed captures the heart and soul of our Eastern Shore landscape, in all its moods and colors. Jane embodies the luminous and timeless essence of the Old Masters in her contemporary still lifes. Long a student of sixteenth and seventeenth century painting and pigment mixing techniques, she is known for classical subjects richly painted, with elegance and touches of mystery.

NOTABLE QUOTE

"To steep oneself in the sky. To capture the tenderness of the clouds. To let the cloud masses float in the background, far off in the gray mist, and then make the blue blaze forth."
