Notes from Nancy :

Art that Sings! What a wonderful way our writer, Gail Clark-Brodt, has chosen to describe the opening of our upcoming show, Mysteries Within, highlighting fifteen new works in oil by Jane Hartley. Jane has put a lot of thought and studio time into the creation of this group of wonderful and evocative still life paintings. These works have inspired Mezzo Soprano Bonnie Forgacs to enthrall us with three operatic selections on October 5, during the First Friday Gallery Walk. Jane's still lifes are wonderfully constructed with a touch of sophistication and a bit of mystery that seem well paired with the same qualities in Bonnie's musical selections. Jane will give a brief introduction to each of three paintings and then Bonnie will perform a special operatic selection especially inspired by that painting, accompanied by pianist Michael Lodico. Please join us this Friday at 6, 7 or 8 PM to be delighted by the art and song of these two talented women. Each performance will last half an hour. As of this October, Carl and I have now lived here for three years. Talbot County and the Mid-Shore region continue to surprise us with the amazing depth and breadth of our talented residents!

Ah… France! What is it about that country, especially its countryside, which enables us to relax in a way unknown to us here? Is it the wine, the cheese, or the very long mid-day meals that make one slow down and really savor each moment? Whatever it is, all of us who were part of the French workshop in September seem to have been touched by that magic. We were up at dawn (a civilized hour of about 7:30 AM on the west coast of France ), and headed off to our painting sites by 9 AM. We returned by 1 PM for a wonderful meal prepared by our French cook, followed by a long period of rest, walking or bicycling. At 4 PM we went back and painted until dusk. Even though I was one of the instructors, the entire 10 days seemed like a vacation to me, and I'm ready to return. For our first European workshop, we were especially lucky to be blessed by wonderful weather and a great group of students. We are in the process of assembling a photo essay of our time in Quimiac. When it’s ready to publish, we'll send you the link.

We are hard at work making the final adjustments to next year’s Workshops Schedule. In 2008 there will be a bit more variety -- featuring some still life and figurative workshops -- along with plein air. The instructors will be gallery artists as well as a few guest instructors from out of the area. Please check our Workshops page frequently; we are updating it often as more details become available. We are now accepting registrations for Pamper Yourself in Plein Air, a 5 day workshop April 18-23, 2008, taught by Bethanne Kinsella Cople, at the magnificent Great Oaks Manor in Chestertown. Please click here to read all about it on our Workshops page.

We have added a new employee to our ranks. Linda Luke, of Oxford, Maryland, will be covering the gallery on weekends. Linda is a professional watercolorist and has an extensive arts background. We know that she will be a valuable addition to the gallery. Gail Clark-Brodt had knee replacement surgery at the end of July. We are thankful that she is well on her way to a full recovery and plans to return to work at the gallery this month. Diane DuBois Mullaly continues to balance her days working at the gallery with her own flourishing art career. At the end of October, Diane will teach her first workshop on the art of painting miniatures in oil. Please click here for more details and registration information, and don't miss this opportunity to paint your own "small gem", perfect for gift giving during the upcoming holiday season.

Now that we have a larger gallery staff, we are happy to announce that beginning October 15, 2007; the gallery will change its hours and be open seven days a week. The new hours are Monday through Saturday from 11 AM to 5 PM, and Sunday 11 AM to 3 PM. Other times are still available by appointment.

In November, we will be showing new works by Tim Bell, who tells us he is departing a bit from his usual subject matter. Whatever Tim chooses to paint, you can be assured he will paint it with vigor and aplomb.
I can hardly wait to see it!

Now, it's time for me to give some final tweaks to my plein air paintings from France . Please stop by my studio when you are in the gallery, and say "bonjour"!

Back to the easel!
