Notes from Nancy ...
Plein Air-Easton! is just around the corner, and the volunteer committee is hard at work making sure that every detail has been carefully thought out. To add to the excitement, the local artists, the Avalon Theatre, the Chamber Music Festival and various local businesses have joined in to make the fun almost non-stop; from the moment the artists arrive on Sunday the 22nd until the final painting is taken off the walls on Sunday the 29th. For a complete listing of events, please go to http://www.pleinair-easton.com . Don't forget to buy your tickets for the Friday evening Collectors Party and the Sunday Brunch! We are very proud to have 14 South Street Art Gallery artists juried into Plein Air-Easton!. Bernie Dellario was one of the three local artists chosen to participate in the national competition, as a result of the Mid-Shore Plein Air Competition in June. Larry Moore would have made 15, but he had a scheduling conflict and will be in Wisconsin instead. All 14 artists will be participating in our annual July show, The American Landscape, so please stop in and see some fantastic large studio landscapes.
Our June show, Gavin Brooks – New Works, was lovely, and her workshop was very informative for those of us lucky enough to participate. Gavin was generous and articulate in the knowledge that she shared with her students. Now we have to take that information and use it in our paintings in our own way. It’s interesting that even after many years of plein air painting, I can always learn from another artist. Our task (to paint a good painting) is not simple, but when we are successful, the satisfaction gained is well worth the effort.
I'm proud to announce that one of our still life artists, Bob Kirkpatrick, has been selected to participate in a group showing of trompe l'oeil artists at the Gallery Fraga on Bainbridge Island , near Seattle . Not only was Bob chosen to be part of this elite group, his painting, Turned Around, was featured on front of the show card. Bob has been with the South Street Art Gallery since its founding in 2000, and we are proud to see how his work has grown. His work is subtle, yet full of humor and whimsy, and very skillfully painted.
I must confess to some mixed feelings about not being a participating artist in Plein Air-Easton! Having selected the judges and being very involved in all aspects of the festival, I didn't feel it was quite fair for me to also participate as a competition artist, but I do suffer some adolescent feelings of having been "left out". The Talbot County Visual Art Center must have noticed this, because they asked me to be their guest artist for the month of July. So during the entire month of June, I have been "competing with myself" and trying to accomplish one plein air painting a day. I missed a few days, but I made up for it by painting 3-4 on other days. You won't see them all in this show-- only those that I feel are the best -- but I hope many of you see the show, at the Talbot County Visual Arts Center (located in Talbottown, behind Joseph A Banks). http://www.talbot-art-center.org/artists.html .
Looking forward to seeing you in July!
And now, back to the easel!
