Notes from Nancy :
Happy New Year!
With the fun and excesses of the holiday behind us, most of us turn to thoughts of how we can do some things better than we did last year. For me, it's how to get into the studio more regularly and how to judge my own work even more critically. I'm at the point in my career as an artist where I hold everything that leaves my studio to an increasingly higher standard. One of the unanticipated benefits of being a gallery owner is that my self-critique skills are constantly honed by viewing the work of others as it comes into the gallery, and I am constantly learning from observing the many stellar works of art that hang on our walls. When I have a problem to solve with one of my own paintings, I can often find the answer (or at least a nudge in the right direction) by simply taking a stroll around the gallery. Lest you all run out and start your own galleries, let me also say that managing a successful art gallery it is A LOT of work, and the work often gets in the way of my own painting. It's a trade-off, but a good one.
Our show this month focuses on new work by our gallery artists – a smorgasbord of new works of all sorts; landscapes, still lifes, florals, cow paintings -- with more arriving as I write. Please stop by and enjoy, during our First Friday Gallery Walk on the 4th of January, from 5 to 9 pm.

For those of you who are artists, or aspiring artists, South Street Art Gallery is offering ten workshop opportunities this year. I think that each and everyone of these workshops offer something to help you in your own quest for artistic excellence. Please take a moment to look them over. http://www.southstreetartgallery.com/workshopschedule.html .

For those of you who can’t commit a full weekend to a workshop, there are still some spaces left in our Annex Gallery Winter Painting Clinic taught by me and co-owner of the Annex, landscape painter David Grafton. Offered in an AM and PM session every Saturday in January, February, and March, this is an opportunity to start new projects, complete painting projects that may have given you some difficulties, and receive individualized instruction in a small group setting. Please call the gallery for more info.
Now, back to the studio!
