Notes from Nancy :
Plein Air-Easton! has come and gone, and we are filled with warm memories of good times with artists and friends -- both old and new. We are also a bit exhausted, so we are late with our August edition! I won't go into all of the details here, but suffice it to say that Plein Air-Easton’s attendance and sales took a huge leap forward, and its name and notoriety have spread from coast to coast. In a few weeks, check out the website http://www.pleinair-easton.com to see photos from this year, as well as photos of the competition paintings. As hoped, the gallery did well that week, too! We are proud to announce that quite a few of our gallery artists won awards at the event. Tim Bell took both the Utrecht Award of Excellence for Best Use of Light, and the People's Choice Award. Both awards were for his monumental plein air painting (4 x 5 feet unframed) titled "Tuesday Evening, Dogwood Harbor". Bernie Dellario took the South Street Art Gallery Award for Best Artist New to the Competition. We had nothing to do with the selection -- the show was independently judged -- but we were thrilled and happy that one of our own took that award. Tracey Frugoli won an Honorable Mention at the Collectors Party for her painting “Scossa”, and then won the Museum Purchase Award for the piece she painted at the Collectors Brunch on Sunday. At the Quick Draw Competition, Scott Prior won Third Place and Jason Tako won an Honorable Mention. At the Collectors Party, Ed Cooper and Tracey Frugoli each had a painting purchased by the Academy Art Museum for its permanent collection.
As we head into the hottest weeks of the summer, feel free to stop by the gallery to take a look at paintings from this year's Plein Air-Easton! competition. We may in be a very old building, but we have an efficient modern air conditioning system, so please take advantage of it and spend a while, reflecting on the diverse beauty of this area as seen through our artist’s eyes. While you’re here, climb the stairs to the gallery adjacent to my studio to enjoy “Contemporary Life”, a selection of my latest figure paintings.
Also for August, we have held over an exhibit of a selection of small paintings by California Colorist, Camille Przewodek. Camille just completed two very successful week-long workshops sponsored by the gallery, and she plans to return again the same time next year.
As if we haven't been busy enough, we just opened an annex gallery in St. Michaels, in partnership with Easton gallery owner and artist, David Grafton. That gallery will feature my work and that of David's, along with a selection of works from other South Street Art Gallery artists. The Annex Gallery is only open on weekends – watch for our Grand Opening later this year -- and do stop in if you are in the area of 400 N. Talbot Street.
And now, back to the easel!

NOTABLE QUOTE
Artists who battle the elements, the extreme effort and the exhaustive study to be able to paint a high-quality work in one sitting, wet-on-wet while on location, have something very special to offer.
